TEM Laboratory Manager

The Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Department has an immediate opportunity in Hayward, CA (Corporate).

Position Objective: To manage the Electron Microscopy Laboratory by insuring quality of service and efficiency of operations in the TEM department.

Professional Status: Bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science and three years applicable experience are required. Completion of professional level courses in TEM analysis. Active membership in at least one professional organization is desirable.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise department staff
  • Manage the day-to-day projects of the TEM department; monitoring sample backlog and turnaround time
  • Oversee the technical soundness of work performed by the department staff
  • Meet requirements for client service performed by the department - including consultation with clients, data interpretation, and coordination of support with the Sample Custodian
  • Assist the executive team in determining capital, salary, and operating budgets for the department
  • Evaluate staffing levels relative to work load and recommend adjustments as necessary to ensure department efficiency
  • Provide technical guidance to the staff; this includes guidance regarding techniques, problem solving, methodologies, and quality control
  • Train new and existing staff in TEM methodologies
  • Review data and reports for accuracy, content, and adherence to Forensic Analytical quality control policies
  • Assist in the screening and interviewing process for departmental staff
  • Participate in professional development activities (i.e. publication of papers, active participation in appropriate organizations, attending classes and seminars, etc.)
  • Consult with the QC Director to ensure all applicable policies and procedures of Forensic Analytical Laboratories

The Particle ID/Special Projects Microscopy Department has an immediate opportunity in Hayward, CA (Corporate).

This is a full-time, regular position Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work.

Responsibilities & Duties:

    Primary duties include the use of various types of microscopy (PLM, Raman, FTIR, SEM) to analyze routine production samples and perform analysis in support of materials science (non-biological) based investigations. This position requires an applicant think creatively and apply problem solving skills using available instrumentation.


  • Present and support clear, comprehensible results of their analyses, both oral and written
  • Keep clear, detailed notes on projects
  • Interact with clients on a regular basis
  • Familiarity with methods of instrumental analysis, including FTIR, SEM/EDS and/or Raman is preferred
  • Court-qualified for expert witness testimony is a plus

Minimum Education/Experience:

    The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in chemistry or other physical sciences (physics, geology, forensic science) with a minimum of two years experience.
